One of the many advantages of speaking at survivor events is the opportunity for me to meet inspiring, wholesome, generous, bright, talented, hardworking people who are making their little corner of the world a better place.
My speaking recently took me to Asheville, North Carolina. One of the other speakers taught the attendees about Pisgah Legal Services, a nonprofit law firm that provides free civil legal aid to very low income people in many counties of Western North Carolina.
Even if you live nowhere near North Carolina, I suggest you carve out five minutes sometime to watch the video entitled "Justice for All" on their home page. Why? Because in the midst of all the bad news - the economy, war, crime, ponzi schemes - you will see something good: people (i.e. donors to PLS) helping Pisgah lawyers (280 of whom are pro bono) helping vulnerable people. In other words: people who can help reaching out to people who need help.
From a practical point of view, Healthy Survivors find out about available services that might help them get good care and live as fully as possible. For me, just knowing about the work of PLS lifts me up and energizes me, and thus helps me live most fully. Maybe watching the video will do the same for you.
