Without uttering a single word, two contestants on a popular reality show highlighted the emotional struggle of cancer survivorship, bringing judges and audiences to tears.
On July 22, 2009, two contestants on So You Think You Can Dance performed a composition intended as a tribute to those living with breast cancer. In the universal language of dance, their performance communicated the sorrow, friendship, anger, trust and redemption that can be part of a survivors' journey.
This masterpiece was choreographed by Tyce Diorio and performed by Ade Obayomi and Melissa Sandvig. The music is by Maxwell's cover of Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work,"
Just last week I blogged about the healing power of art. Take a few minutes to watch this dance performance. If you have time, keep watching after the performance. Take note of the responses of the judges, people notorious for being crass. Watch the audience reaction. The best part for me was then watching the dance once again.
Expression through art -- as performer or audience -- is one more way to transcend the limits of illness. In addition to the language of medicine, Healthy Survivors speak the language of the heart and soul.
