Surgeon Melanie Bone founded a new resource for people with breast cancer: Cancer Sensibility Foundation.
Bone was 40 years old and the mother of 4 children under 6 years old when she underwent bilateral mastectomies and reconstruction, chemo and radiation for breast cancer. Ever since, she's been using her expertise, insights and creativity to develop resources for breast cancer patients beyond the usual items.
For example, on ChemoShop USA you'll find a waterproof shirt that enables patients to take showers while their surgical incisions are fresh and must be kept dry. "The anti-microbial, post-surgical, water resistant shower shirt garment not only protects the surgical incisions, drain portals sutured into the chest/armpits or torso, and the drain tubes/bulbs from getting wet while showering/bathing, the product also supports the weight of the drains, tubes and bulbs.
You'll also find "chemo port covers" in a variety of colors. Flowers that attach to shirt straps camoflage the bulge in the skin that makes many people self-conscious enough to avoid wearing shirts that expose that area of the upper chest.
With the power of a few words and an illustration, greeting cards designed with the breast cancer patient in mind can lift a patient's spirits during the ordeal of treatment and recovery.
